In roughly 15% of patients, an adrenal tumor is the cause of Cushing’s disease. Roughly 85% of patients with Cushing’s disease have the pituitary-dependent disease. The adrenal gland then overproduces cortisol, the hormone responsible for the clinical signs of Cushing’s disease.
